Details about currently available positions beginning July 2021:

We are seeking multiple Postdoctoral Fellows to conduct research related to early child development, early child obesity prevention, and health literacy-informed interventions, within the divisions of General Pediatrics and Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics. The fellowship is especially relevant for: 1) individuals with a doctorate in a field related to early child development (e.g., developmental psychology, early childhood education) as it provides an opportunity to learn about the application of developmental principles within a real-world health care environment, 2) individuals with a doctorate in public health-related fields (e.g. epidemiology, health promotion) interested in getting hands-on experience in intervention development, implementation, and dissemination within and outside of the health care setting, with a focus on behavior change and addressing health disparities.

The Divisions of General Pediatrics and Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics are nationally recognized for research focusing on: 1) poverty-related disparities in early child development and school readiness; 2) early nutrition and parent/child behavioral patterns associated with obesity; and 3) use of health literacy interventions to impact child health outcomes and parenting behaviors as a strategy to ameliorate poverty-associated health disparities. These two-year fellowships, with flexible start dates in the Fall/Winter of 2021, will be supported by National Research Services Awards (T32 awards), in conjunction with NYU Grossman School of Medicine (https://med.nyu.edu/departments-institutes/population-health/education/fellowships-training-programs/population-health-science-scholars-program). If interested, selected fellows will have the opportunity complete a Masters in Clinical Investigation degree.

The postdoctoral candidates for these positions would join one of several labs in the Department of Pediatrics, depending on interest and expertise.

- Bellevue Project for Early Language, Literacy, and Education Success (BELLE), led by Drs. Alan Mendelsohn and Caitlin Canfield, is dedicated to developing and evaluating interventions aimed at promoting parent-child interactions to enhance school readiness in low-income children (including Video Interaction Project).

- Starting Early Program (StEP), led by Drs. Rachel Gross and Mary Jo Messito, is dedicated to generating new knowledge about the behavioral, social, economic, and environmental factors during pregnancy and early childhood that increase disparities in early child obesity, and evaluating parenting interventions to reduce early behavioral patterns associated with obesity in diverse low-income families.

- Health Literacy Research Lab, led by Dr. Shonna Yin, dedicated to developing and evaluating low literacy strategies to improve child health-related outcomes and ameliorate poverty-associated disparities in areas spanning acute, preventive and chronic care. Specific areas of focus include medication safety, obesity prevention, and chronic disease management (e.g. asthma), and the use of technology-based approaches to enhance health care-related communication.

Postdoctoral fellows will work closely with multidisciplinary teams of researchers that bring together experts from a wide range of fields, including developmental psychology, nutritional science, and education, in collaboration with clinical experts in general and developmental-behavioral pediatrics. This fellowship provides substantial opportunities for new PhDs seeking significant experience, mentorship, and networking, as well as close collaboration with the Principal Investigators and considerable involvement in authorship of abstracts, presentations, and manuscripts.

- A doctoral degree (PhD, EdD, etc) is required at the time of starting the fellowship.

- Spanish proficiency is desirable but not required.

- Due to requirements of the funding agency, candidates must be a citizen or a noncitizen national of the United States or have been lawfully admitted for permanent residence at the time of appointment.

- NYU and the Department of Pediatrics are committed to diversity and inclusion in all aspects of recruiting and employment. All qualified individuals are encouraged to apply and will receive consideration without regard to race, color, gender, gender identity or expression, sex, sexual orientation, transgender status, gender dysphoria, national origin, age, religion, disability, military and veteran status, marital or parental status, genetic information or any other factor which cannot lawfully be used as a basis for an employment decision.
